Jay Coleman is a local professionally trained sculptor/painter. He has spent more than 15 years of his career producing and using various forms of art and expression to include large scale murals, music, art therapy for youth and seniors, portraiture and bronze sculpture. Coleman’s sensitivity to the human spirit has driven his dedication and service to the community. He has found a way to connect his love of art, music and teaching to lead programs geared towards underserved communities. As a portrait painter, Coleman has been commissioned by presidents of colleges and countries (Angola, Cape Verde) including public and private clients nationally and internationally.

Coleman painted a portrait of Rosa Parks which hung at her memorial service and was commissioned to paint a mural in Vienna, Austria in 2023. His murals can be seen in schools and community-based organizations throughout the District of Columbia and Maryland. One of Colemans’ murals was unveiled at the National Museum of African Art celebrating the connections between Omani and East African cultures and sculpted the medallions for the Howard Theatre Walk of Fame. His mural “Three Kings of Anacostia depicts Martin Luther King Jr., a young Marion Barry, and Malcolm X and was commissioned by DC’s Arts and Culture district in Ward 8 . His recent work includes a large bronze sculpture entitled “Loveful Hands” at the Eastern Market Metro Park (Metrorail Station) and is currently working on a mural for MS Now. Other current projects include bronze sculptures and murals for DGS Percent for art program.Coleman attended Morehouse College, Howard University MFA program and is a graduate of the Corcoran School of Art and George Washington University located in Washington, DC.
