The Prince George’s Arts and Humanities Council (PGAHC) is officially seeking its next Poet Laureate—an esteemed cultural ambassador who will represent the power of poetry, creativity, and civic expression in Prince George’s County.
Applications are officially open for the 2026–2028 Prince George’s County Poet Laureate.
This prestigious two-year appointment honors literary excellence and civic engagement, offering a platform—and a $5,000 yearly honorarium—for one gifted poet to serve as an ambassador for the literary arts across our vibrant, creative community.
What Is a Poet Laureate?
The Poet Laureate of Prince George’s County is more than a title—it’s a cultural torchbearer. This individual will elevate poetry throughout the county by:
Hosting public readings and workshops
Leading at least four community-based poetry projects per year (one per quarter)
Participating in arts events across all nine Councilmanic Districts
Supporting local youth poets and collaborating with the Youth Poet Laureate program
Creating signature events for National Poetry Month and Arts & Humanities Month
Championing poetry’s role in everyday life
From classrooms and coffee shops to civic gatherings and cultural celebrations, the Poet Laureate will use their voice to make poetry more accessible, relevant, and resonant for all.
Who Should Apply?
We’re looking for passionate literary leaders who:
Are 21 years or older
Have resided in Prince George’s County for at least three years
Have published poetry or hold a strong track record of spoken word performances
Are eager to engage with diverse communities and lead public programs
Are available to serve a full 2-year term (May 1, 2026 – April 30, 2028)

Applications open February 6, 2026, and close at 11:59 PM on March 15, 2026. All submissions must be made through the Submittable platform.
To apply, you’ll need:
A Poet’s Statement outlining your vision for the role
A Resume detailing your experience and publications
Five original poems (no more than 2 pages each)
