Be Jeweled: A Mother’s Day Jewelry Workshop
Mother’s Day doesn’t look the same for everyone.
For some, it’s brunch reservations and flowers.
For others, it’s reflection, remembrance, or simply finding a meaningful way to say “thank you.”
At Arts’tination, we believe creativity can hold all of that.
That’s why we’re inviting the community to join us for Be Jeweled, a special jewelry-making workshop designed to honor mothers and mother figures through art.
What Makes This Workshop Different
This isn’t your typical craft class.
Participants will create custom jewelry using acrylic pour skins—a fluid art technique that produces organic, one-of-a-kind patterns. Each piece becomes a wearable expression of love, memory, and connection.
Whether you’re sitting side-by-side with your mom or creating something in her honor, the experience is designed to feel intentional.
Guided by Artist Mary Faye Claggett
Led by Maryland-based artist Mary Faye Claggett, the workshop blends creativity with storytelling.
With a background in science and a passion for fluid art, Mary brings a unique perspective to the process—helping participants explore both technique and meaning in their work.
What to Expect
Step-by-step guidance in jewelry creation
A live acrylic pour demonstration
A welcoming, all-levels environment
Time to reflect, connect, and share
Who Should Attend
This experience is open to everyone:
Families looking to create together
Individuals honoring a loved one
Anyone seeking a meaningful way to celebrate motherhood
Make It Personal
At the end of the workshop, you won’t just leave with jewelry.
You’ll leave with something that tells a story.
And that’s what makes it worth it.

ARTIST PROFILE
JAY DURRAH
Jay Durrah is a self-taught artist from Western PA who has been sketching since the age of nine. Jay has a B.A. in Political Science from Howard University, Class of 1983. Jay had some formal training at the Corcoran School of Art and the Montpelier Arts Center.
Jay draws portraits mostly starting with the eyes, for he believes they capture the essence of a person’s being. Jay’s style strategically places multiple colors on canvas to create portraits. The use of multiple colors represents the multiracial aspect of humans. Through his art, Jay aims to draw people's attention to the commonalities of humanity.
Jay has showcased his work in museums, galleries, corporate exhibitions, music venues, and art festivals throughout the country. A highlight of his journey was getting selected for a group show at the US Embassy in Rome. Jay had four solo shows: at the Lamar Art Center in Barnesville, GA; Gallery O on H in Washington, DC; The Harlem Coffee Co. in Harlem, NY; and Harmony Hall Art Center in Ft. Washington, MD.
Jay completed several public art projects in the DMV area. During the George Floyd protests, Jay had a mural on display at the National Building Museum, depicting a young Black boy holding a sign that asked, “Am I Next?” His works are held in either private or public collections, both in the US and abroad.

Women’s History Month Screening: MOVE WHEN THE SPIRIT SAYS MOVE
In celebration of Women’s History Month, the Prince George’s Arts and Humanities Council (PGAHC) invites the community to a special film screening at Arts’tination honoring one of the Civil Rights Movement’s most powerful and often overlooked leaders.
On Saturday, March 28 at 5 PM, join us for a screening of: MOVE WHEN THE SPIRIT SAYS MOVE: The Legacy of Dorothy Foreman Cotton
Admission is free. Registration recommended.
Dorothy Foreman Cotton was a bold civil rights educator and activist whose work helped transform the Civil Rights Movement from protest into empowered civic action. As the only woman on Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s executive staff, Cotton led the Citizenship Education Program of the Southern Christian Leadership Conference, helping thousands of African Americans understand their rights as citizens and become active participants in shaping democracy.
Through leadership training, freedom schools, and powerful freedom songs, Cotton inspired communities across the country to move from a mindset of oppression to one of empowerment and civic engagement.
Despite her extraordinary impact, her story has often remained in the background of Civil Rights history. MOVE WHEN THE SPIRIT SAYS MOVE brings her legacy to the forefront, exploring the essential role women played in the movement and the continued relevance of Cotton’s message today.
The film was directed by Ry Ferro and Deborah C. Hoard, award-winning filmmakers known for producing documentaries focused on social justice, human rights, and civic engagement.
Following the screening, attendees will have the opportunity to participate in a talkback discussion reflecting on Dorothy Cotton’s legacy and how her work continues to inspire activism and civic leadership today.
We hope you will join us as we celebrate Women’s History Month through film, history, and conversation.

About SUMRIEN ALI
SUMRIEN ALI is a modern-day visual artist who focuses on abstract paintings. Her paintings invite viewers to reflect on reality through the artist’s eyes, stepping outside of themselves to experience another person’s viewpoint and emotional range. By combining dynamic color combinations, layers, and texture, Sumrien strives to create movement and to explore the journey of discovery, life, and depth. Her currently preferred medium is acrylic on canvas with a palette knife.
Sumrien sees architecture as an art and a science. It is the act of taking the abstract and building a reality. Art, on the other hand, starts with reality and creates an abstract representation of it. She is drawn to producing abstract works because of the creative freedom they allow. They have no boundaries, rules, or regulations, unlike architecture, but support limitless emotions and possibilities.
Born in Karachi, Pakistan, and raised in Poughkeepsie, NY, Sumrien lived the early part of adulthood in Raleigh, NC, before calling Washington, DC, her home. She is a practicing architect and designer transitioning into real estate development after completing her Master's in Real Estate Finance and Development from Georgetown University. Sumrien’s most admired artists include Mark Rothko, Georgia O'Keeffe, and Jackson Pollock.
