Public Art At Shady Glen Fire Station

COMMUNITY HEROES, 2022

ARTIST STATEMENT

The iconic fireman's ladder is the inspiration for the powerful sculpture at the entrance to the Shady Glen Fire Station. Washington Glass Studio abstracted the strong visual form and incorporated internal lighting to the vertical tower, responding to both the Fire Department and the classic architectural building form the artwork compliments.

Standing at approximately 15 feet, the three-sided steel structure is clad in handmade cast glass. The exaggerated foreshortening of the ladder structure represents the heights our firefighters reach to perform their duties. The colorful glass artwork insets incorporate artistic references to aspects of fire prevention, fire protection, emergency medical services, and the surrounding community.
