Roots and Wings: A Juneteenth Sankofa Experience

Celebrate Juneteenth through art, reflection, and community at Arts’tination.

This hands-on workshop invites participants to explore the meaning of the Sankofa bird, a powerful African symbol that encourages us to learn from the past as we move toward the future.

Led by Dr. Yemonja Smalls, attendees will paint, collage, and embellish wooden Sankofa bird cutouts using fabric, patterned papers, beads, symbols, and meaningful words. Through guided reflection and creative expression, participants will create a personalized work of art representing heritage, resilience, identity, and hope.

The experience also includes opportunities for individual and group reflection centered on the question: What lessons, traditions, and values do we hope the next generation carries forward?

Each participant will leave with a completed Sankofa bird and a visual reminder of the connection between roots and possibility.
