Public Art At Bladensburg Brand Library
READING THE WATER, 2023
Size: 12' x 6' Material - Fused Recycled Glass, Steel
ARTIST STATEMENT
"Reading The Water" celebrates the power and beauty of water, emphasizing its essential role in shaping our lives and showcasing the interconnection between water and the Town of Bladensburg. Each panel of kiln-fired glass tells its own story, inviting viewers to be transported to another place, much like the books in the library. This commanding glass mural embodies the fluidity and beauty of water through organic shapes and flowing lines, reminiscent of rivers, ponds, and oceans. Utilizing translucent and transparent glass, the artwork changes with the shifting light, offering a dynamic visual experience. At the heart of this artwork is a message about the importance of environmental stewardship and the need to protect our natural resources. Much of the glass mural is made using recycled glass and components. By drawing attention to the beauty and fragility of water, "Reading The Water" encourages viewers to reflect on their own relationship with the natural world and to consider how they can contribute to a more sustainable future.
ABOUT THE ARTIST
THE WASHINGTON GLASS STUDIOS
The Washington Glass Studio was established in 2001 with a vision to deliver high quality large-scale art and architectural projects into the public domain. The Studio brings together Washington Area sculptors, increasing the opportunities of individual and collaborative sculptural work and creating venues for public interaction with the art. This includes all forms and techniques of glass along with metal, concrete, lighting, electronics, architecture and other sculptural media.
OKEY DOKEY, 2023
Size: 7' x 34" Material - Expanded polystyrene foam and epoxy clay and resin.
ARTIST STATEMENT
"Okey Dokey" original sculpture was completed in Florida studio, then transported to Somers Creative Studio in western New York to be coated in resin and painted the final colors and finishes. We had discussions both within the studio and with the project team and it was agreed that the addition of an actual "bowsprit" would really drive the artwork home visually. Once fully fabricated, it was then installed onto the "bow" of the ship at the new Bladensburg Branch library.
