Why do we sometimes place a hyphen between two parts of a person’s identity—as though one ends precisely where the other begins?
The truth is, people are multifaceted. Our backgrounds, characteristics, interests, skills, and communities don’t exist independently from one another. They overlap, influence each other, and together help shape who we are.
Join Tatiana Figueroa Ramírez, Poet Laureate of Prince George’s County, for Hyphenated No Hyphen, the next creative writing workshop in the There’s Poetry in PG series.
Through poetry, guided creative exercises, and group discussion, participants will explore the seemingly contrasting parts of themselves and practice writing about both their distinctions and their fluidity. Together, we’ll examine poetry that recognizes the complexity of human identity and celebrates our ability to belong to more than one group, community, culture, or experience at once.
This workshop is an invitation to write about yourself without feeling the need to choose one box over another.
Whether you’re an experienced poet or simply interested in exploring your identity through writing, all are welcome.

¿Por qué a veces sentimos la necesidad de colocar un guión entre dos partes de la identidad de una persona, como si una terminara exactamente donde comienza la otra?
Las personas somos multifacéticas. Nuestros orígenes, características, intereses, habilidades y comunidades no existen separados unos de otros. Se entrelazan, se influyen y, juntos, ayudan a formar quienes somos.
