A New Era for Film in Prince George’s: Shewa Studios Opens with Unforgettable Celebration

The energy was undeniable on Friday, December 5, as creatives, community leaders, and film lovers gathered at the Gateway Arts Center to celebrate a powerful milestone: the official launch of Shewa Studios.

Founded by award-winning filmmaker Mignotae Kebede and her production company, THR33 Productions, the evening marked more than just the unveiling of a new creative space—it was a bold declaration that film and media have found a new home in the Gateway Arts District.

What Went Down

From 6–9pm, guests explored the vibrant new studio space located inside the 39th Street Studios, with a lineup that blended culture, connection, and celebration:

  • Live music that kept the energy flowing

  • Interactive cyc-wall photo shoots that brought the visuals to life

  • An authentic Ethiopian coffee ceremony that rooted the event in heritage and hospitality

  • A room full of filmmakers, artists, and changemakers imagining the future of local storytelling

About Shewa Studios

Shewa Studios is more than four walls—it’s a platform for local stories and a launchpad for underrepresented voices in film and media. In partnership with Gateway CDC’s Film and Media Program, the studio aims to:

  • Support filmmakers, storytellers, and creatives

  • Create economic opportunities in the creative sector

  • Center stories rooted in place, identity, and culture

  • Build community through collaboration and access

This space will play a pivotal role in expanding the creative economy of the Prince George’s County Gateway Arts District—positioning the region as a rising hub for film production, media innovation, and talent development.

What’s Next

Missed the launch? Don’t worry. Shewa Studios will be open again on Saturday, December 13 during the public open studios at the Gateway Arts Center. And in February, keep your eye out for the premiere screening of Skylark—the latest project by Kebede and THR33 Productions.

Prince George’s is telling its story—and Shewa Studios is helping amplify it. Stay tuned as this dynamic creative space continues to grow, inspire, and make room for the next wave of visionary storytellers.
